The England known today has been put together for thousands of years. The English culture has been made up of many different groups of people who occupied England at different times. Some of these groups arer the Celtics, the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, and the Normans. In the begining there was a group of people known as the Celts. These people were made up of farmeers and hunters. They had a religion known as Drudism. Druids were the religious leaders who performed rituals including sacrificing and praye. In 55b.c. Julius Ceaser of Rome invaded England over the next 3000 years Romans reigned England a more civilized culture and brought the cathoolic religion, meaning "universal religion." The Romans also brought roads, public buildings , and forms of law. In 449 A.D, England was being invaded by the Anglo-Saxons. With the arrival of then while the Roman Empire was dying out, the Anglo-saxons brought the start of the English language. At this time England was not known as England until this time also. Even then it was known as "Angels Land" and then was eventually known as England. The Anglo-Saxons had many religious beliefes that they also brought along with then to England. They belived in Pagan ways and thatlife was in the hands of fate. Each Anglo-Saxon tribe had a king whom was choosen by a Witan. Under the King were the Earls, then there wecond class which included freemen who owned land and could ingage in commerce. These freemen had surfs who would work the land and then there were the slaves or milatary prisoners. The Britons were affraid of the Anglo-Saxon's and fled to Wales. Some fled to Northern England now known as Scottland. This is were the celtic language came from. The last two groups of people were the Vikings and the Normans. The Vikings began to envade Europe throughout the eighth and twelth centuries. During these invasions they destroyed monastaries, manuscripts, and stole sacred religious objects. In 871 A.D the king in reign during these invasions was Alfred the Great. Alfred was the only king to ever be known as "the Great." The contibutions he made included a Germanic laguage, civilized more than before, and Norse words became Engish. He also gave the Vikings a large area of land for them to settle to stop their raids. This area were they settled was known as Danelaw. After Alfred the Great was Edward the Confessor. He had a cousin who was also a king. His cousin was William of Normandy. After Edward died in 1066 his cousin took over England. This was the end of Anglo-Saxon literature. So throughout time there has been many differnent cultures in England. All during this time in history the first form of poetry was introduced with herioc and Elegiace poetry. The Anglo-Saxon language combined with Latin and French made up our modern English language. The Anglo-Saxon laguage is still a known language. We now know it as middle English.
